If you want to understand Queer culture a great place to start is the The Ballroom Scene, the exciting Vogueing glam competitions that emerged in New York in the 1970s. It is often said that Ballroom is the birthplace of trends and pop culture.  Go take a look -- you will fall in love with the different houses that compete for your admiration.  These shows give great insight into Queer Black and Latinx realities in the USA.

Want to go to a function?
Then, watch these:

Documentary: Paris is Burning
Where to watch: Apple TV, Prime, Netflix
YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k70tlLetqqw
This 1980s documentary film is on everyone's LGBTQ 101 list. Prepare to be moved; many scenes are difficult but important to watch, especially in relation to the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Reality TV: Legendary
Where to watch: HBO Max in USA /Crave in Canada
This recent reality show is  so fun and so decadent.  Icon judges Law Roach and Leiomy Maldonado will make sure you know exactly what's going on.  Judge Megan The Stallion is also a hit. Nothing compares to the performances you will see though.  Wow, just wow.
Season 1 trailer here: youtu.be/UYepGZuRLhA
Trust me, watch all three seasons.

Film Review Two-Spirit: A Trans Woman’s Struggle for Acceptance (The New Yorker)

This short, 15-minute film documents Georgina, an Indigenous trans woman of the Wyuu community in Colombia.  The film shines a light on the overlapping issues of poverty, sexism and transphobia in Georgina's life. Hauntingly yet heartwarmingly, Georgina continues to treat people with love as her means of survival. This is an intimate look into a life that seems quite different from what many of us experience. After watching this, I was left thinking about my privileges, including being a gay white man in a developed country.  I believe LGBTQ+ worldwide rights are a priority cause to pursue.

Enjoy! Please let me know what you think.
